FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does it cost to get certified? The Green Business program is offered at no costs to businesses. However, in the process, businesses may incur some expenses to meet the requirements, but they will be connected to available rebates or grants to help offset those costs. Businesses will not be charged for the certification itself and any assistance provided. Businesses will also get the opportunity to receive a rebate of up to $500 or $1000 for BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ owned businesses for their completed certification. To receive the rebate, you must show receipts of your expenses.

2. Who can get certified? Any business in Long Beach can get certified.

3. How long can the certification process take? The process of certification varies per business. There are various factors that can affect the amount of time it takes to get certified, such as the size and complexity of the business location, how many green practices are already in place, and the commitment of the business to making required changes. Certifications can take about 2 to 3 months if a business already has various green measures in place. For more complex facilities that require comprehensive changes or upgrades, certification can take up to 6 months. We are here to assist you every step of the way.

Why should I still get certified? You are already one step ahead to getting certified if you already implement green practices in your business! If you are also certified by other means such as Certified Blue Restaurants, then the process of getting Green Business certified will take less time. When it comes to practicing sustainability, there is always room for improvement and ideas you may have never even thought of whether you are just starting your sustainable journey or already far along. Plus, you will receive a decal and certificate that lets the community know that this business is green certified!

7. For those who lease their business space and/or don’t have direct control to their utilities, can we still get certified? Yes, you still can! In fact, many of our certified businesses are tenants. We will provide the information and guidance you may need to become certified as a tenant.

8. How long does my certification last? The Green Business Certification lasts for 3 years and can be renewed. The process of renewing a certification is not as long and comprehensive as when you first began.

9. How does a business renew their certification? A business should receive a 3-month email notification prior to the expiration of their certification. A business may also contact us in advanced to get started on the recertification process.
